Tailored machines require the same effort with the design, implementation and validation of safety-related functions as series machines. Whilst the costs can be spread over many machines in series business, constructing special machinery will take up a much higher share in comparison. Rexroth has now developed the first ever safety-related package for presses, comprising a hydraulic standard control block and a safety PLC with a function block library, which come together to form a turnkey and type-examination certified unit. Thanks to this, manufacturers of hydraulic presses, rubber and plastic presses can significantly reduce their manufacturing time and costs.

The centerpiece in terms of hydraulics is the Type C IH04 press module, a standard unit with a modular construction for a performance range of up to 3000 l/min. All standard hydraulic functions for presses are mapped in such a way that they can be individually adjusted to the machine requirements. As a control system, it fulfills the requirements for installation in hydraulic presses according to ISO 16092-3, as well as in plastic and rubber machines according to DIN EN 289, and, according to ISO 13849-1, it is considered to be a “safety-related control system component” with category 4 PLe according to ISO 13849-1. Operators use the press module to design, build or modify upper piston functions in accordance with general safety requirements. The EG type-examination certificate HSM15009 is available.

Expansion of the safety control at the PLC level

In connection with SafeLogic, the safety PLC implemented in the L75 and VBP40 of Rexroth, manufacturers can achieve the application-specific requirements for safety-critical functionalities. Rexroth completes the package with a function block especially developed for the IH04 Type C press module.

According to the operating mode, such as automatic mode for example, single stroke, set-up or jog mode with lower speed and the closing movement as well as the position switches of the valves, the function block releases the switching of the safety-related valves on the press module. Any errors that have been detected can be processed further in text form, with information about the faulty hydraulic function.

Effort reduced, time saved

With the safety package, manufacturers can reduce the effort needed for the design, implementation and validation of standard safety-related equipment. Why? Rexroth provides documentation including operating instructions and type-examination procedures, as well as TÜV-certified function blocks in the form of a library. In addition, the validation efforts are drastically reduced thanks to the certificates. The turnkey safety solutions consist of integrated standard components and software. They cover a high variety of presses and processes. With this, manufacturers can implement a uniform safety concept for all machine sizes and functions. The package is also suitable for the modernization and modification of already installed presses.
