Maintenance contract until 2028: protection for more than one million people

With more than one million inhabitants, the greater area of Rotterdam and Amsterdam is protected against flooding by storm surges from the North Sea by the Maeslantkering barrier.

To ensure that the moving structure can continue to fulfill its task in the future, the operator, Rijkwaterstaat, has agreed a new maintenance contract with Bosch Rexroth for drive and control solutions. The contract will run for the next twelve years until 2028. It covers preventative inspection, all necessary maintenance work, spare parts management, emergency readiness and lifecycle management with modernization and adaptation to the latest state of the art. 

The surge barrier closes off the 360 meter wide Nieuwe Waterweg (New Waterway) during a storm warning. The moving doors of the weir are each 210 meters long and 22 meters high. They are stowed in a dry dock under normal weather conditions so that shipping traffic is not obstructed. During a storm warning, they close off the Nieuwe Waterweg in less than 180 minutes. The Maeslantkering surge barrier was put into operation in 1997 and used every five years on average. At the time, Bosch Rexroth designed, manufactured and commissioned the drive and control solution as a system partner.
