Focus on clouds22.01.2017 9.00
On top of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self Organization are investigating turbulent cloud currents. Amongst others, the aim of the research is to improve weather forecasts. Three high-speed cameras on an outdoor rail carriage track tiny cloud droplets for one second. An exact constant travel speed of the 260 kilogram heavy carriage compensates for the proper motion of the cloud and is crucial for the observation. For this technically challenging task, the institute relied on drives and ball rail systems from Rexroth. Copyright image: Michael Gebhardt (UFS GmbH) |
